A young kid looks out a herd of buffalo

Springtime brings the baby bison, and even at Summer's peak, the 71,000-acres of Custer State Park never seem to feel congested. All season long (May thru October with June, July as Prime months) offers endless opportunities for visitors of all ages to see the wildlife with their mothers in their natural habitat -- the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.

Learn why Custer State Park is so popular with CNN Travel, Conde Nast Traveler, NBC Nightly News, and more.

Guided Wildlife Experiences

If you want to wake up and walk to your Buffalo Safari Tour, modernized cabins and lodge rooms are available at the State Game Lodge. Embrace Presidential History throughout the lodge! Tours depart from Creekside Lodge Lobby (on the grounds of the State Game Lodge).

Bring the whole crew and kick off your heels at our nightly Wildlife Tour Hayride & Chuckwagon Cookout at Blue Bell Lodge. Call for reservations (end of April thru Mid-October): 605-255-4531. You may encounter elk, bison, prairie dog town, deer, and more!

Blue Bell Lodge is home to the Blue Bell Stables, as well as the Hayride & Chuck Wagon Cookout. Stay in one of Blue Bell's beautiful and peaceful log cabins.

If jaw-dropping scenery is calling you to an elevation of 6,145 feet, explore endless hiking, watersports, and rock climbing at Sylvan Lake. Will you spot a mountain goat?

At the entrance to Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway, find Sylvan Lake Lodge and its private picturesque cabins, tucked into the granite that surrounds Sylvan Lake. Views, views, views!

Finally, calling all young families to Legion Lake. Within walking distance of your cabin, find an easy hike around the cozy lake, a laid-back novelty lodge with ice cream, coffee & a full-service restaurant; fishing, watersports, swimming beach, playground, and of course the ducks, birds, deer, and more!

Newly-remodeled cabins are tucked behind the hill at Legion Lake Lodge-- far enough back for privacy, but close enough for perfect access to it all.
