Custer State Park Resort Overview
The view from Sylvan Lake Lodge can't be beat, thanks to architect Frank Lloyd Wright. After the original lakeshore resort burned down in 1935, Wright suggested the current location amidst a forest of pine and spruce trees.
Follow Needles Highway to its dramatic end, where Harney Peak looms overhead and the waters of Sylvan Lake sparkle below. The lake is the center of resort activity. Stop in at the lakeside general store and pick up your rental watercraft of choice. Just next door to the store is Sylvan Lake Auditorium, perfect for your family reunion or group gatherings.
If you're after a little more solitude, throw in a fishing line from shore. Take a swim to cool off, or find a stretch of beach to call your own. At Sylvan Lake you're also close to a network of hiking trails that connects several Black Hills landmarks. At night, try one of our tasty game dishes in the Lakota Dining Room. Then its off to your cozy lodge room or rustic, secluded cabin for a restful night of sleep.

The State Game Lodge
This gracious stone and wood lodge is set in a beautiful mountain valley, surrounded by a ponderosa pine forest. Grace Coolidge Creek winds through the valley and offers excellent trout fishing. Oak, birch, and aspen trees line the babbling creek, providing a colorful year round display.
The State Game Lodge served as the "Summer White House" for President Calvin Coolidge in 1927 and was visited by President Dwight D. Eisenhower for several days in 1953. It was built in 1920, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Inside, you'll discover a blend of the past and the present, the elegant and the outdoors. Accommodations range from stately lodge rooms to modern motel rooms and cozy cabins. The historic State Game Lodge Dining Room serves South Dakota specilaties like buffalo, pheasant and trout.
After dinner, relax on the front porch or take a leisurely stroll along Grace Coolidge Creek. Named for Calvin's first lady, the stream flows through the lodge's sprawling front yard.
The park's popular Buffalo Safari Jeep Tours originate from the State Game Lodge. Take an open-air ride into the back country in search of bison! Guides tell you all about the park and its amazing wildlife.
Creekside Lodge
Featuring 30 luxurious, oversized lodge rooms, a beautiful lobby & Great Room, two meeting rooms perfect for business or leisure gatherings, and incredible views of the Black Hills! Click Here for more information.

Custer State Park Resort Overview
Blue Bell Lodge is as comfortable as a pair of old blue jeans. This hideaway retreat with a guest ranch flavor offers a Western experience that's sure to charm the boots right off 'ya!
At Blue Bell, you can take your pick of Western theme activities. Saddle up for a trail ride through some of the park's prettiest areas. If you're feeling a bit more daring, try an all day ride, led by seasoned cowboys.
Our chuck wagon cookouts, another cowboy tradition, draws quite a crowd. Start with a haywagon ride through the scenic back country of the park to a secluded canyon followed by an old-fashioned chuck wagon dinner, complete with Western entertainment.
The Blue Bell Lodge dining room serves up home cooking, with specialties that include buffalo and steak. If you have a family reunion, the White Buffalo Room could be your ticket to a great event. The Blue Bell General Store is close by for picking up supplies.
Every cabin has a fire pit outside, so you can end your day like the real cowpokes did - telling tall tales around the campfire!
Custer State Park Resort Overview
This laid-back lodge sits directly on the water's edge. It's a choice spot for summer picnics, lazy days at the beach and adventurous treks into the wilderness.
The lake is named for the American Legion Post that once leased this land.
A variety of comfortable, family-size cabins are nestled in the forest surrounding the lodge. And the Legion Lake Lodge Dining Room and Store provide guests with the best in deli, bakery and burgers in casual lakeside setting. Here you can pick up fishing licenses and all the supplies you need.
Fishing, boating and swimming are at your fingertips, when you stay at Legion Lake. You can rent a variety of watercraft, from paddle boats to hydrobikes.
When you've had your fill of water activities, rent a mountain bike and begin exploring the forest. The Centennial Trail is right out the back door!
For hikers, we recommend the Badger Clark Historic Trail. Badger Clark found this area behind his home particularly inspirational.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial
South Dakota's Black Hills provide the backdrop for Mount Rushmore, the world's greatest mountain carving. Gutzon Borglum started his vision in 1927. These 60-foot high faces, 500 feet up, look out over a setting of pine, spruce, birch, and aspen in the clear western air. The memorial offers interpretive programs, exhibits and a film at the Lincoln Borglum Museum.

Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park
The 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road takes visitors through the open grasslands and pine-speckled hills that much of the park’s wildlife calls home. Visitors will often see bison, pronghorn, whitetail and mule deer, elk, coyotes, burros, prairie dogs, eagles, hawks and a variety of other birds. The morning and evening hours are the best times to view the wildlife, as during that time the animals are most active. On the southeast part of the loop, the Wildlife Station Visitor Center gives visitors shade and information on wildlife and outdoor habitats. Winding drives throughout the park are enjoyed at a slower pace. When making plans, please allow ample time to travel at a safe speed – generally 25 miles-per-hour or slower. Expect travel time of about 45 minutes to enjoy the Wildlife Loop. Guided Wildlife Loop Caravan Custer State Park is loaded with nature. Grab your binoculars and experience this beauty and wildlife on a guided tour of the park’s Wildlife Loop Road, located in the southern portion of the park. During the caravan, participants may observe bison, pronghorns, elk, whitetail deer, mule deer, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs and coyotes. The road is also famous for its wide variety of colorful wildflowers and prairie grasses. You can be guided along this scenic route with a naturalist daily at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Memorial Day to mid-August. Photo courtesy South Dakota Tourism.

Needles Highway
The Needles Highway is more than a 14-mile road – it’s a spectacular drive through pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen and rugged granite mountains. The road’s name comes from the needlelike granite formations which seem to pierce the horizon along the highway. The roadway was carefully planned by former South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck, who marked the entire course on foot and by horseback. Construction was completed in 1922. Visitors traveling the highway pass Sylvan Lake and a unique rock formation called the Needle’s Eye, so named for the opening created by wind, rain, freezing and thawing. Winding drives throughout the park are enjoyed at a slower pace. When making plans, please allow ample time to travel at a safe speed – generally 25 miles-per-hour or slower. Expect travel time of about 45 to 60 minutes to enjoy Needles Highway. Photo courtesy South Dakota Tourism
-
Iron Mountain Road
This winding road runs between Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the junction of US 16A and SD 36. Constructed in 1933, only a portion of this road lies within the park, but it is a must-see. Along the highway, visitors will find wildfire exhibits, pigtail bridges, magnificent Black Hills scenery and tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore. Winding drives throughout the park are enjoyed at a slower pace. When making plans, please allow ample time to travel at a safe speed – generally 25 miles-per-hour or slower. Expect travel time of about 45 to 60 minutes. Photo courtesy South Dakota Tourism.
-
Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway
The Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway complements the park’s three scenic drives and includes some of the most dramatic natural and historic features in the Black Hills. Sites include the Needles, Mount Rushmore and a bird’s eye view of the rocky peaks and forested hills of the Black Hills National Forest. This designated scenic byway includes all or portions of two scenic drives within the park. The byway was named for former South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck who planned and surveyed most of the roads located within the park. Expect travel time of about two to three hours.Photo courtesy South Dakota Tourism.

Mount Coolridge Lookout and Fire Tower
The Mount Coolidge Lookout and Fire Tower was built in 1940 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It rests atop a 6,023-foot peak and is used for communications and spotting fires. The turnoff is located on SD 87. A 1.7-mile gravel road leads visitors to the top of the mountain, but large vehicles and motorhomes should avoid making the trip, as the road is narrow and winding. From the top, visitors can see as far away as the Badlands. Photo courtesy Custer State Park.
